The official biography was conceived on a grand scale by Churchill’s son, Randolph, and became even grander when Martin Gilbert was appointed to oversee it in 1968. Sir Martin expanded its scope to include every relevant piece of documentary evidence that could be found in any archive. Under his direction, the official biography reached its full eight volumes of narrative, and 17 of 23 volumes of The Churchill Documents were completed. Together they provide both a rich treasury and a massive resource, carefully indexed and annotated. In 2012, Sir Martin’s declining health required that he turn the project over to Larry P. Arnn, President of Hillsdale College.
In addition to the free download, the College is also observing the anniversary with a brand new scholarship opportunity open to students in fall 2015. The Winston Churchill Endowed Scholarship will provide financial support to three undergraduate students and two graduate students who demonstrate an interest in politics and history and possess exceptional writing skills.
Other on-campus events celebrating Churchill Day include:
- Churchill impersonator Randy Otto will pose for photos with students at the Churchill statue from 12:30-2 p.m. The sculpture was unveiled in October 2004 as part of the College’s Liberty Walk celebrating champions of freedom. Other honorees include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher.
- Otto, as Churchill, will conduct a Q&A with guests from 4-5 p.m. in the Formal Lounge.
- Research from the Martin Gilbert papers will be on display along with the entire printed official biography in the Grewcock Student Union.
- Clips from Churchill documentaries and a slideshow on the Churchill Project will play on a monitor in the Grewcock Student Union.
Several upcoming Hillsdale College events will offer further opportunities to study Churchill’s legacy, including a National Leadership Seminar, “Churchill’s True Greatness: Lessons for Today,” in Denver, CO, April 20-21, and a Center for Constructive Alternatives seminar on-campus, October 4-7. The College is also planning a new online course about Churchill. Dr. Arnn’s new book, Churchill’s Trial: Winston Churchill and the Salvation of Free Government, will be released in January 2016.

I am saddened that I did not see your offer of the 8 volume series of Sir Winston Churchill until today (I had an inundated email account that I had neglected for quite sometime). I am an ardent admirer of Mr. Churchill and would have enthusiastically taken advantage of your generous offer. Unfortunately I am currently on disability and cannot afford the purchase of these magnificent works outright at this time. Please keep me on your notification list should your remarkable offer become available again at some future date.
